Big Tick 4     The Ascent of Slieve Donard

Slieve Donard is the highest peak in the Mourne Mountains in Down, in Northern Ireland. It rises 2,796 feet (852 meters) above sea level. On clear days, views of the Donegal Mountains to the west, the Wicklow Mountains to the south, and the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea may be had from its summit. Slieve Donard is named after a saint of the A.D. 400's.The most classic route that many day walkers will do when visiting the Mournes - Climb Donard. A lot of people see Donard at only 852 metres as small and easy to climb, but believe us its not! Be prepared as for all walking in Ireland to have sunshine one minute and rain the next. The best way to climb Donard is to start at Donard car park situated in the seaside resort of Newcastle. From here follow the track through the forest which will lead into the Glen River valley. The climb is easy to begin with but will gradually get tougher as the terrain changes. The best way to describe the climb up Donard is slow and uneventful but the view from the summit is breathtaking - if it's a clear day.The distance to the summit of Slieve Donard is approximately 9/10 km.
